The Borough are a four piece bluegrass band from Brisbane who play bluegrass. You read that right – Bluegrass, not “bluegrass” (where traditional instruments are relegated to fashion accessories): Bluegrass with a capital ‘B’; played as it was meant to be played – with banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass fiddle and four voices around a single microphone.
The Borough are a capable bunch alright; made up of four nerdy obsessives that have been in and around the Brisbane music scene for many years. They regard The Borough as their happy place; so there’s no newgrass, altgrass or anything else non-blue and if there’s a line, they would be going straight down it.
The Borough evolved from a regular jam in the West End of Brisbane thanks to generous music loving owner Alan Simseker. Advertised quietly on facebook, the night quickly became popular with local established bluegrass ‘heads’ previously unknown to each other, and newer, emerging pickers. It still runs every Wednesday.
Watching the Borough perform is exciting and fun. The band has an energy and drive that will carry you along from the first note to the last and restore your faith in fun, live, and purely acoustic music.
