The Double Dole Stringband are an old-time and bluegrass band formed in Melbourne during the long winter of COVID-19. They released their debut album of original tunes and songs “Jobs & Growth” in 2021, to a string of sold-out east coast crowds in Canberra, Sydney, Beechworth and Melbourne. They have since played regular shows in Melbourne including headlining shows played by popular folk artists including John Flanagan, Mel Taylor, Stav and the Big Scrub Revival. The band also run monthly old-time sessions in Melbourne which are designed to be an inclusive introduction to Old-Timey music and an exciting gathering for seasoned pickers and fiddlers. Things like this session and our focus on original tunes as well as digging out gems from the tradition contribute to the bands enthusiasm for old-time music as a vibrant community activity, and to carving out a progressive space in the genre. The band is made up of respected members of Victoria’s old-time community, taking members from well loved bands such as Glitter Rats and Black Finch, as well as working on an album with Double Dole guitarist Luke Byrnes for the 2019 National Folk Fellowship.
