Luke Byrnes is the recipient of the 2020 National Folk Fellow and has spent the last year researching, arranging and reinterpreting archival field recordings of music collected around the Northerns Rivers Region NSW. Luke and the Big ScrubRevival String Band have reinterpreted tunes and songs collected from field recordings of country hall dance players, Irish railway navvies, bundjalung folk singers, Aquarius festival hippies and even an old family string band from the hills of the Dorrigo Plateau. The ensemble will present the colourful, post-colonial history of the Northern Rivers through songs and tunes rediscovered from the Oral History and Folklore Collection of the National Library. Scheduled to launch their album and debut performance at this years National Folk Festival, due to COVID-19 cancellations the band is instead hoping to launch their album “Folk Music of The Northern Rivers” at the Dorrigo Folk and Bluegrass Festival.
